2009 Champions of Summer

August 18, 2009 marked the first annual Champions of Summer celebration, held at St. Pauls McMurray Turf Fields.  The event was created to bring all the Homegrown Lacrosse Leagues together for one final event to celebrate lacrosse in Minnesota. 

In addition to lacrosse action, there will be a number of activities for attendees to join in the fun from lacrosse shot speed and test rides with the new Buick Lacrosse sedan. 

Competitive lacrosse action by the state’s best high school, and men’s players included: 
  • Homegrown Lacrosse Varsity League All-Star Game 
  • Homegrown Lacrosse Varsity League Championship
  • Lakers Lacrosse League (Collegiate / Post-Collegiate) Championship and Consolation Games

Lakes Lacrosse League Championship Game

 The Minnesota Moose defeated the Mpls Lakers in the Lakes League inaugural Championship game. 

It a back in forth battle between the old and new Minnesota Lacrosse guard.  The Moose found timely scoring from Joe Coestello, and Ryan Hurley to get themselves within one at half.  

After the half the Moose took control of the game winning the time of possession battle and taking the lead into the fourth.  The Lakers fought hard and put on a late surge with goals by Todd and Stu Baxter.  

But in the end the Minnesota Moose walked away victorious. 


Buick High School All-Star Game

Homegrown Lacrosses' inaugural High School All-Star Game was presented by Buick and showcased the best players from the 2009 High School Summer League.  Each team from the High School League was represented with players selected by coaches recommendations, and league administrators.  The All-Star game has since become a staple for the High School Summer League. 


Buick MPH Challenge

The Buick MPH Challenge brought out the competitive spirit in players - young and old.  Homegrown Lacrosse's good friends Anthony Oberlander and Pat Achenbach challenging players to test their skills and shot speeds.  At the end of the evening, Colin Achenbach and Ryan Hurley shared the title "Fastest Shot in Minnesota" at 92 MPH. 

Age Division Fastest Shots:

  • 4 grade and under - Oliver Forst with 37 MPH 
  • 5-6 grade - Corbin Clark with 54 MPH
  • 7-8 grade - Carter Yepsen with 68 MPH
  • 9-12 grade - Justin Vossen with 90 MPH
