Noah Hall: The Graphic Designer

Noah Hall is the man behind Homegrown’s distinct look and graphic personality.

As Homegrown’s original and only in-house graphic designer (and for a long time literally in house), Noah has the unique position of having to translate Homegrown into logos and designs.

For someone whose work finds its way into most Minnesota lacrosse player’s bags he is remarkably soft spoken.

Who have been the biggest influences?

My biggest influences would be the two women in my life: my mom and my bride-to-be. Both have impacted my design by pushing me to be the best I can. In turn, I learned to make this into a desire to do, create and revise until I reach the given the final purpose life.

What does Homegrown Lacrosse mean to you?

Well, I believe in Homegrown for one thing. It’s more than the leagues and camps. To me, it is about adding a community concept to the game, teaching kids how to succeed on and off the field. It isn’t about winning or losing but about learning. The coaching becomes all encompassing… I guess that is literally what it is.

In essence we’re building things that take a lot of work. No matter what you are trying to accomplish it is about doing it for the right reasons. That’s why I support Homegrown the way that I do. They focus on the growth of people rather than the growth of their wallet.

For example, one of my most vivid Homegrown memory is from back in 2005 when I convinced Aron to run a camp in Roseville, even though not very many kids had signed up. I think about 30 kids ended up coming out for the camp, which turned out to be a blast for the coaches and the kids. The experience really impacted me.

How do you define Homegrown's graphic style?

In the beginning I never thought it (Homegrown clothing) would become as big as it has so I didn’t think much of it at first. In some respects, I feel like Homegrown and I are evolving and growing together, and that is really fun to watch.

I’ve definitely given Homegrown a distinct brand identity. Since all the art comes through me, the result is that it is easily identifiable. And yes, it’s pretty cool to go to a game and notice both teams wearing my designs.

But it’s tough to describe the Homegrown graphic style in words; its easier to describe it more in phrases that anything else. The first being “Aron’s will,” then “solid color” and last but not least “a touch of whimsy.” These are regular phases in the design process with Aron.

How has lacrosse impacted your life?

Lacrosse has played several roles in my life and has shaped parts of my life that I didn’t expect. Through the sport, I had a major opportunity to develop leadership skills on and off the field when I started the Club Lacrosse team at UW-Stout. From managing budgets to organizing team trips, the experience definitely has taught me discipline and let me become a leader outside of the sport.

The sport also has created quite a few job opportunities for me including fifteen years of coaching and a plethora of design work. The sport has also quite literally taken me “places.” I’ve been to Maryland, Colorado and other places because of Lacrosse. It has been an awesome journey.

As a 7/8 coach, it is amazing watching the progression of the kids. It seems like every year the kids are coming back better than the year before. I mean, I was just picking up a lacrosse stick for the first time at their age. The things these kids can do are incredible. It is definitely a testament to Homegrown because they are improving outside of the season rather than slipping backward. As a coach, it’s great that they’re getting better outside of the time I have to coach them.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time (what free time?), I like to bike, make things out of wood, snowboard in the winter and of course design.
