Homegrown Lacrosse Lax P.E. In-School Program

I: Program Overview

Homegrown Lacrosse’s qualified coaching staff will bring two coaches to each school; one boys’ coach and one girls’ coach.  Two coaches are required because of the differences within the two games.  The purpose of this program is to bring valuable lacrosse expertise and instruction to local schools.  We hope to expose those unfamiliar with lacrosse to the sport and to aid P.E. instructors in properly teaching lacrosse in their future classes.

II. Program Goals

  1. Introduce the sport of lacrosse to students throughout a 1 week unit (history of the game, rules, individual skills, team concepts & training techniques).
  2. Develop a curriculum that can be passed on to P.E. teachers for use in future classes.
  3. Connect interested students to after-school lacrosse programs in their communities.
  4. Help increase the level of interest of lacrosse within Minnesota.

IV: Instructors:

Homegrown’s coaching staff is the best in Minnesota.  All of our coaches have played both high school and collegiate lacrosse, directed & counseled summer camps, and has coached youth, high school and collegiate teams. We even have a professional player from the Minnesota Swarm on board. Prior to program start all counselors would undergo necessary pre-screening. Counselors will also gladly meet any school’s individual requirements.
Due to the differing natures of boys and girls lacrosse, each high school class would require one boy’s coach and one girl’s coach. This will ensure a more competitive and constructive atmosphere. Having separate coaches will also help encourage students to become active in after-school lacrosse programs and help students to understand the differences between the two types of games. Middle school and elementary programs may offer co-ed units.

V: Safety:

Although there will always be at least one program leader that is first aid certified, program leaders will rely on each school’s P.E. instructor in case of emergency. All games will be adapted to a non-contact version. Tennis balls will be used instead of lacrosse balls for safety purposes.

VI: Equipment

Homegrown Lacrosse provides all lacrosse sticks.. Contracted instructors will remain responsible for any lost or stolen equipment. Goggles, cones, a (modified) goal and tennis balls should be provided by the schools where available.  When not available, Homegrown Lacrosse will provide the necessary equipment.

VII: Program Costs:

Instructor pay and curriculum planning are the only costs associated with the program, making this program extremely cost effective. Average program costs are around $700 - $1400 per week long unit. At most schools this breaks down to less than $7 per student. In some cases, outside funding is available.
